Handmade Masquerade Masks or or Mardi Gras masks can sometimes be extremely expensive items to buy. So much time and skill goes in to creating face masks, to say nothing of the materials used, which sometimes might be quite exotic.

Masks come in all shapes, sizes and fabrics, some were even carved out of  a single piece of wood.

Venetian masks are collectors items and can either be used for going to the ball in, or decorating a wall in your home. Sometimes a Venetian mask can be quite a rare find, and there is no doubt about it that given the right setting, they can look most stunning.

Children have been making masks for generations and there is nothing easier than cutting a basic ‘Zorro’ shape from the back of a cereal packet and attaching a piece of elastic to it through 2 small puncture holes in the cardboard.

The children can have hours of fun creating different shaped carnival masks for themselves and their friends and with the addition of glitter or paint and perhaps a feather for the girls the look will be complete. There will be many kit forms of making  a face mask, but with a little patience, you’ll be able to collect all the things you need yourself.

Why not start collecting old cereal boxes now and when the rain comes as it always does you will be ready with a new idea to keep the kids happy. Who knows, you may find out you have a craft expert living amongst you.

Use your local library, they are sure to have lots of books to show the children how to make a range of masquerade masks and Venetian masks. Good luck!
